What's "NEW" in the New Year

Writer's picture: Adnan HussainAdnan Hussain

As we approach another New Year, I am thinking about the real significance of this change. Yes, the calendar changes digits, marking a transition. But for me, the essence of the New Year isn't in this change; it's in the 'new' – the opportunity for personal transformation and growth.

You see, the true value of a New Year is not in the change of dates. It actually lies in the changes we choose to make within ourselves. It's a time to reflect on becoming a newer, better version of ourselves compared to who we were in the past year.

So, as we celebrate this New Year, let's focus less on the date and more on the potential for personal renewal and growth. If we can evolve and improve, then there's something truly significant to celebrate.

The question is: How do we do that? My answer is simple. Beyond the list of goals, tasks, etc there is an idea, a way that will drive you towards how you want to live your life. It's about the mindset with which we approach our lives – the way we live out our purposes and values. For me, the essence of this mindset is captured in one powerful word: 'COURAGE.'

Courage manifests in many forms and at various levels. It's not merely about defiance or loud declarations. True courage is a subtle yet potent force, a kind of superpower.

So in 2024, I want to embody courage in its fullest sense. I want to have the courage to be vulnerable and stay authentic. I want to be courageous and own my stories of successes and mistakes, take responsibility for what went right, and what didn't. I want to have the courage to shun the comfort of stagnation and take the pain of growth. I want to have the courage to show up, no matter what happens. I want the courage to learn from failures, to use setbacks as stepping stones towards greater success. I look forward to have the courage to take risks, the courage to step out of shadows, make bold moves and yet, the courage to stay humble and grounded.

But thats not it. I want to have the courage to be: to allow myself to grow, live, be present and mindful, to have compassion, love, joy, and abundance; allow myself the courage to think, act, speak with integrity, compassion and authenticity. Most importantly, the courage to BE HUMAN!

Being human is complex and beautiful. It involves embracing our flaws, celebrating our strengths, and constantly evolving. In the upcoming year, my wish for myself and for you is to find the courage to navigate this complexity with grace and strength and allow ourselves the courage to have courage.

Here’s to a year of courage, growth, and authentic humanity!
